Russia claimed this would be over in weeks, if not days, with Ukraine being completely crushed. That was years ago. It might not be over, but after all the talk about how they would flatten Ukraine with their doctrine of tanks, tanks, and more tanks only for Ukraine to get handed an entire class of weapons that had been developed specifically to counter a Russian tank blitz (MANPATS such as Javelin or NLAW) and then creating new classes of drone warfare to even take out the Russian navy, I'd say things are going pretty well.

A little (comparatively) country is still standing after the world's biggest bully loudly said they wouldn't be. I'd call that winning so far. At this rate, this could go on for another couple years until Russia just runs out of equipment or there's an uprising from people who refuse to be conscripted.

Neither side is winning. Both sides are simply piling up corpses until one of them runs out of resources and surrenders.

The only way for Russia to win is if NATO withdraws support for Ukraine. The only way for Ukraine to win is if there's some sort of internal upheaval in Russia, causing them to abandon the campaign - or if NATO straight up sends troops to Ukraine (but that would violate a whole bunch of agreements and plunge much of Europe into war, so it's unlikely).

It's not like one side wins, other side loses. Ukraine has goals, Russia has goals, and it's entirely possible neither of them ever achieves those goals.


Russia wants to take over Ukraine entirely, turn it into a pro-Russian or at least not pro-Western state, wants it to be demilitarized, wants to hold significant territory beyond Crimea indefinitely? I think it's quite unlikely they get any of that. Ukraine wants long-term security assurances it can rely on, its prewar territorial integrity including Crimea? Also pretty unlikely. Right now, what looks most likely is a nasty compromise neither side will be very happy with. 


If you want it broken down in laymans terms and have the attention span, Perun on YouTube is a defense logistics expert who regularly breaks down the state of the war, including stated goals from both sides, how possible they might be, and what would need to happen to get there, using open source intelligence from both sides of the conflict. (He also does coverage of lots of other things related to wars, defense procurement, etc., but his latest Ukraine war survey is pretty recent in the grand scheme of things and should be easy to find.)

I think its stale or might be leaning Russia. Thing is, Russia cant fight with any efficiency, its been their problem for a while, and Ukraine is fighting very hard. It'll be if Ukraine is willing to throw as many bodies into the meat grinder that Russia is willing to. UK defence ministry is saying around 1,000,000 russian casualties (dead,wounded,missing, out of the fight) and approx 250,000 dead since 2022. Those are insane numbers for modern fighting. The US has lost under 8000 in its war zones since 9/11/01. We'll see if Ukraine can survive getting bled of fighters. Im blown away the entire world is just watching this in 4k and just sitting back.

Nobody.  Neither side is likely to reach their full political goals, and both sides are paying a horrible price.  Russia is probably doing better of the two, but they abjectly their initial war goals and have just been trying to find a good off ramp that gets them some value for all of that cost.  It's unlikely, even under optimal conditions, for Ukraine to come out ahead on this, so it's a matter of what's the best possible outcome they can get given the current situations.
